Start with a conversation - send Barbara a message and she’ll talk you through options to decide if this is right for you.

what is yoga therapy?
Not a yoga class but a practice built for you
In a group class, everyone follows the same sequence. Yoga therapy works the other way around — we start with you: your health, your history, your goals, your life now and how your body at this time.
Drawing on the Viniyoga tradition — developed by TKV Desikachar from the teachings of his father, T. Krishnamacharya — the approach integrates posture, breath, and awareness in a way that's specifically adapted to you. It’s not modified from a standard class, but designed for you.
It's particularly useful when you're dealing with something specific — a health condition or conditions, a difficult period of life, or simply a sense that a generic class can't quite reach what you need and meet you where you are.
Yoga therapy and 1-to-1 yoga looks at the big picture as well as the details and provides a practical, embodied and manageable approach to creating change.
How is this different to a group class?
Built around your body & your needs with a holistic view
You want to take an active role in improving your health and wellbeing
Paced and structured for you within your life
Barbara's full attention on you and what’s right for you
Specific goals & conditions to be more effective
Home practice designed for you that’s enjoyable and manageable
Who comes for yoga therapy
People dealing with something specific - and wanting proper attention.
Yoga therapy is useful for a wide range of physical and mental health concerns. It's always adapted to the individual — which means there's rarely a condition that makes it impossible, only conditions that require more care.
Not sure if this is right for you?
Just ask. Contact Barbara with information on what you're dealing with and she'll tell you honestly whether yoga therapy can help — and how.
What to expect?
A simple, unhurried process.
There's no complicated intake, no intimidating assessment. It starts with a conversation, and we go from there.
1 to 1 sessions and yoga therapy sessions are personal and individual yoga sessions. The session time is used to design, develop and go through in detail your personal yoga practice. This reflects your current health as well your aims or goals and how to make the practice easy to put into your week. You take this individual practice away with you (it can also be recorded for you to watch later) for use at home.
1 to 1 yoga and yoga therapy are most effective used over a period of time. Sessions are spaced a little apart to allow you time to practice before the next session. Each session is reviewed to see what’s happening and adjusted to accommodate change and progress. You progress at the speed that’s right for you.

I've had several 1-to-1 sessions with Barbara and each one has been so valuable. She listens to what you need and uses her skill and knowledge to tailor-make a session that not only perfects your use of yoga but can also be used by you outside of the class. I especially enjoy how Barbara combines the use of the breath with the asana and often includes some great yogic wisdom too. Lisa
What each session includes…. More than an hour on the mat.
Every session with Barbara is a full conversation between your body, your breath, and your life outside the practice room.
A proper conversation first
Every session starts with checking in — how you're feeling, what's changed, what you noticed since last time. Your experience matters here.
Posture, breath & awareness — integrated
The viniyoga approach works with these three together, not separately. Breath isn't an afterthought here — it's the thread through everything. It supports and connects both the mind and body.
A home practice designed for your life
You leave with a personal practice to work with — manageable, and designed for your. This is where the long-term change can build from.
Practice that evolves as you do
Each session refines and develops what came before. It's not the same routine repeated — it moves with you, it changes as you do.
Things People want to KNow…
Do I need prior experience of yoga? Not at all. Yoga therapy works whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned practitioner — everything is introduced at exactly the right pace for you
How different is this from a group class? In a group class, I adapt the practice as much as I can to the room — but ultimately everyone follows a shared structure. In a 1-2-1 or yoga therapy session, the practice is built entirely around you: your body, your health, your goals. There's no shared structure to work around.
How many sessions will I need? That genuinely depends on what you're coming for. Some people find that 3–6 sessions give them a solid foundational practice and a chance to observe changes. Others enjoy regular ongoing sessions as their practice deepens. We'll talk about what makes sense for you before you commit to anything.
Can yoga therapy work alongside medical treatment? Yes — yoga therapy is a complementary approach, not a replacement for medical care. Many people come with the support of their GP or consultant. I'll always ask about your medical history before we begin, and I'll work within whatever constraints and advice your health situation requires.
Where do sessions take place? In person sessions are held in Chesham. Please drop me a message and I'll let you know the details — I like to have a brief conversation first to make sure I understand what you're looking for before we arrange anything.
Do you offer sessions online? Yes - usually via Zoom. If you are considering online sessions, message me as it’s useful to understand more from you to see how well these will work.
What does it cost? Pricing is above. Time between sessions can vary so it might be that you want a few weeks between sessions which keeps cost very manageable.
Living with Long COVID?
Long COVID & Yoga Therapy - read more
If Long COVID is what’s brought you here, there’s a dedicated page with more detail - what Long COVID is, why yoga therapy is well suited to it, how Barbara works with breathlessness and fatigue specifically, and what the peer support group achieved.
Why 1-2-1 works well for Long COVID
At exactly your pace — no exceptions
Long COVID often means unpredictable energy levels, post-exertional malaise, and symptoms that vary day to day. A group class — even a gentle one — can't adapt to that. A 1-2-1 session can, completely. If you need to rest for ten minutes, you rest. If today is a hard day, the practice meets you there. Barbara doesn't ask you to push through anything. You work together to find the best yoga fit for you.
It starts with a conversation.
Tell Barbara a little about what you're dealing with — or simply say you're curious. She'll reply personally and help you work out whether yoga therapy or a 1-2-1 session is the right next step for you.
